About the piece
The Latin hymn "Adeste Fideles" appears in manuscripts by John Francis Wade, an English Catholic copyist, from 1743, and the tune is usually credited to him. The English words most people sing are Frederick Oakeley's translation of 1841.
The notes
The letters above are the tune, played by your right hand: G G D G A; D B A B C; B A G G F♯; E F♯ G A B; F♯ E D D D; C B C B A; B G A F♯ E D; B B A B C; B A B B A; B C B A B; C B A G F♯; G C B A G G. Longer boxes are longer notes. Press Play and follow along, slow it down with the speed slider, or turn on Wait for me and play each note yourself.
How to learn it
- The opening: G, then G D G A: "O come, all ye faith-ful". The first G is a pickup.
- The chorus ("O come, let us adore him") repeats the same notes three times, louder each time.
- One sharp: G major, so every F is sharp.
- Hymn style: each hand plays two of the four voices. Practise the top line alone first.
