How a chord is built

A major or minor chord has three notes: a root, a third and a fifth. Count up from the root in half steps (every key, black and white): a major chord is root + 4 + 3 half steps, a minor chord root + 3 + 4. Seventh chords add a fourth note on top; sus chords swap the third for a second or fourth.

Major chords

Major: 1 – 3 – 5. Sounds bright and settled.

Minor chords

Minor: 1 – ♭3 – 5. Sounds darker, more wistful.

Dominant 7th chords

Dominant seventh: 1 – 3 – 5 – ♭7. Sounds bluesy and restless, as if it wants to move on.

Major 7th chords

Major seventh: 1 – 3 – 5 – 7. Sounds soft, dreamy and a little jazzy.

Minor 7th chords

Minor seventh: 1 – ♭3 – 5 – ♭7. Sounds mellow and smooth.

Diminished chords

Diminished: 1 – ♭3 – ♭5. Sounds tense and unstable, pulling towards the next chord.

Sus2 chords

Suspended second: 1 – 2 – 5. Sounds open and airy, neither major nor minor.

Sus4 chords

Suspended fourth: 1 – 4 – 5. Sounds open and expectant, waiting to resolve.

Add9 chords

Added ninth: 1 – 3 – 5 – 9. Sounds bright and shimmering.

Playing it, but it doesn't sound right? Ivory listens to you play and tells you what's off: a note that's missing, a hand that lands late, a chord that's uneven. Then it shows you how it should go.
