Who we are. Ivory is a piano-coaching app made by Pale Labs Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17146626), whose registered office is at 71–75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9JQ. Pale Labs Ltd is responsible for your data (the data controller). Questions about privacy: support@ivorypiano.com.
The short version. Ivory listens to your playing and talks with you about it. To do that, what you play and what you say is sent to an AI model to write Ivory's replies. Unless you turn it off, we also keep your conversations with Ivory and the notes you play, to improve Ivory and train future versions of it. We never keep recordings of your playing. We don't sell your data, show ads or track you across other apps.
What stays on your iPhone
- The sound of your playing. When Ivory listens through the microphone, it turns what it hears into notes on your iPhone. The sound itself is never uploaded.
- Photos of your sheet music are read into notes on your iPhone.
- Speech you dictate to Ivory is turned into text on your iPhone.
- Your library: pieces, plans, notebooks and keepsake videos.
You can delete any of this in the app, or all of it by deleting the app.
What leaves your iPhone, and why
| Sent to | What | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Our server, and from it our AI providers: Anthropic (the maker of Claude), directly or through OpenRouter | Your messages to Ivory; the notes of your takes (pitch, timing, how hard each key was struck, pedal) and the app's measurements of them; notes read from your sheet music; a sheet photo when you attach one; earlier messages in the same conversation | To write Ivory's replies |
| Google, through OpenRouter (if Ivory's voice is on) | The text of Ivory's reply | To turn it into speech |
| Our server | Your account identifier from Sign in with Apple (which can hide your email), and a record of each reply's cost and timing | To run your account, keep the free lesson fair and apply fair-use limits |
| Our server, kept to improve Ivory (unless you turn it off) | Your conversations with Ivory (your messages, the notes and measurements sent with them, and Ivory's replies), and the notes of each take you save. For a take heard through the microphone: the notes Ivory heard and how sure it was of each, never the sound. Sheet photos are not kept | To improve Ivory's coaching and train future versions of Ivory and of our own models |
| RevenueCat | Your subscription status, linked to an anonymous customer ID | To manage your subscription |
| Apple | Payments | Apple handles every purchase; we never see your card |
Our AI providers process what's sent to write a reply. Anthropic keeps API data for a limited time for safety and doesn't train its models on it.
Keeping your conversations and playing to improve Ivory
"Help improve Ivory" (in the app: Settings › Privacy & data) is on unless you turn it off; we tell you this when you sign in and on the membership screen. While it's on, your conversations and the notes you play are kept on our server as described above, under a random ID rather than your name or account. Turn it off and nothing more is kept from then on. Deleting your account deletes what was kept, though models already trained on it are not retrained. We may use it to train AI models of our own; we don't sell it or give it to others to train theirs.
Sharing
You choose what to share. A keepsake video or recap is only shared when you share it. We don't sell personal data and don't use it for advertising.
How long we keep it
- On your iPhone: until you delete it.
- Account and usage records: while your account is open, then deleted within 30 days of closing it, except purchase records we must keep by law.
- Conversations and playing kept to improve Ivory: until you delete your account.
Your choices
Turn "Help improve Ivory" off at any time in the app. You can export your account data or delete your account in the app (Settings › Privacy & data › Account data & deletion), or ask us at support@ivorypiano.com.
Children
Ivory is for people aged 13 and over. We don't knowingly collect data from children under 13; if you think a child has used Ivory, tell us and we'll delete it.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update the date above and tell you in the app when it matters.
